I bought this for my son as a birthday gift. I remember getting my first pocket knife as a kid, and it was a big deal. I also remember a few close calls and my friends having mishaps with the points on their knives. This knife seems sharp, but I feel better knowing my kid's not going to stab himself (or others) with it. I also like that the safety latch is simple for kids to operate but effective. We brought it on a backpacking trip, and it came in handy.
Nice quality steel for my son to learn to take care of.
This knife is sharp right out of the package, but give it a few swipes on a leather strop, and it's like a razor blade.
With the rounded tip I ordered for my staff as cabling knives. The rounded tip let's use screw couplers and such with no fear of injury or damage. Super sharp out of the gate. Lock is tight so dry hands only or just use a slipjoint. Overall very happy and recommend for everyone including emergency prep/first aid kits.
I bought this knife to teach my children responsible of of a knife and let them whittle their own sticks for marshmallows and hot dogs. Since I've never had an Opinel, I used it a bit first to get a feel for it. The design is nearly perfect, with only a couple minor caveats.Pros:* No sharp point* No spring, so less chance of it accidentally closing on your fingers* The locking ring allows you lock it both open and shut* It comes very sharp, which is better if you cut yourself. Clean cuts from sharp knives heal much faster than jagged cuts from dull knives* The spine is sharp enough to spark a ferro rod* The thin knife geometry and stainless steel is excellent for food work* The rounded tip allows for easier and safer use with techniques using two thumbs on the back of the bladeCons:* The locking ring can be difficult for young fingers, which means I will have to teach my younger one to handle it like a fixed blade at first* The end of the blade nearest to the locking ring needs a choil. I can see a child struggling with the ring and getting a cut or scrape on the corner of the blade.* The sharp spine can bug your thumb if you choke up when carving (remember, we're talking young fingers). You can fix if with a file, sandpaper, and/or a grinder if you wish. I like the ability to light a fire, so I bought my kids gloves. I would really like to see it come out of the box with a rounded spine* This is not a hard-core bushcraft knife, so it won't take abuse. Then again, kids should be taught to respect a pocket knifeIn conclusion, I really like this knife. The pros outweigh the cons, and the cons can be fixed by adult supervision. I definitely recommend this as a first knife!
Good for kids
Super sharp right out of the box, cool locking ring and comfortable in the hand. The blade cuts through plug tobaccos with consistent thin, even clean cuts. When folded, makes for a broad tamper when smoking bigger bowls.I got the orange one so I can see where I laid it down last.
Fantastic product my kid loves it
I bought this knife to cut morels while mushroom hunting. Due to numbness & weakness in my hands, I have trouble opening traditional pocketknives and found this to be a good workaround. Because I'm accident prone, I was also looking for something not quite as large or "dangerous" as a pointy super-sharp folding knife, so the blunt tip on this appealed to me. I was surprised at how sharp it was when it arrived and actually swiped in on concrete a few times so it wasn't as likely to cut me just by touching the blade. It would have been wonderful for whittling a stick! The locking ring is very easy to turn, but it would be nice if it clicked into place. A hole for a lanyard or keyring would also be a nice upgrade. That said, this knife did a wonderful job in the woods and the bright orange color was easy to see against the leaves and grass when I put it down.
This knife is great for teaching your young one about handling a pocket knife. The locking ring is a bit awkward and as noted in some reviews, there is a raised part of the metal ring that seems a bit sharp. The knife handle feels a little under finished. The ergonomics are ok as judged by holding in my adult hand. Some shaping of the handle to improve indexing might be helpful. All that said, as a beginner knife this is a great choice.
